save files to root c:\

Hi,

We are using a self developed application to generate reports out of a database. These reports are generated as an .xls and are saved in the root (as c:\filename.xls) and until W7 this worked just fine, the only thing we needed to change is the UAC settings.

Recently we purchased a new machine with W8 and on this machine it seems to be impossible to write a document directly to C:\filename.xls

I can save a file on the desktop and drag it in to c:\ but i just can't save directly to it.

Does anyone have a resolution, it will save us a partitional rebuild of our app.

regards, Wim

It is very uncommon to save reports directly into root of boot drive.

Suggested solution: You can decrease the security settings for root. CACLS is your friend

By my knowledge CACLS only applies on file and subfolderlevel and not to the main folder level c:\

I tried it already and it came back with several errors...

I found an article on http://www.mkyong.com/computer-tips/cant-create-file-in-the-c-drive-root-directory-windows-8/

this is to grant the rights to all users. As soon as the PC is out of use i'm gonna try to apply this, it looks promising...

The solution seemed to be to change the register value

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System\EnableLUA

from 1 (on) to 0 (off), after this restart Windows to apply the settings.
